#1- Examine pages 5-6. Why does Arnold draw? What is the power of creative expression? (Addie)

Arnold draws to express his feelings, and because he thinks words are too limited and unpredictable. He also feels that its the only way to get his views out into the world. "Almost all of the rich and famous brown people are artists. They're singers and actors and writers and dancers and directors and poets" (Alexie, 6). Arnold doesn't have any other hope to get him off of the reservation, so he draws for freedom. If he draws a picture, he feels everyone will understand it, no matter what language they speak. They will understand it no matter what boundaries or burdens they have. Even though he has 'all sorts of physical problems' he can still draw, and is free to express himself so that anyone can understand.

  1. Arnold does, indeed, draw cartoons to express his feelings and show his opinions and views in the world. But along with the fact that drawing "could help him get rich and famous," Arnold believes that everybody can tell what a picture is showing but only a handful of people can tell what words mean because not every speaks the same language. "If you speak and write in English, or Spanish, or Chinese, or any other language, then only a certain percentage of human beings will get your meaning. But when you draw a picture, everybody can understand it" (Alexie, 5). All Arnold wants is to be heard and understood by other people.
