A true friend promises to be by your side when you need them no matter what. Junior considers Rowdy to be his best friend. The one human that protects him and understands him and his needs. Rowdy is aggressive and tough, and if anything ever happens to Junior, Rowdy will be the first one to the situation to help out in the matter. Rowdy's father abuses him and his mother, which causes them to lie in public about there situation. Junior knows that he has to help Rowdy and be there for him because that is what a true friend is for. "My house is a safe place, so Rowdy spends most of his time with us. It's like he's a family member, an extra brother and son" (Alexie, 17). Sherman Alexie shows in this quote how close Junior considers his friend, Rowdy. Rowdy is as close to him as a family member, and Junior is not willing to let that go.
Even though Junior and Rowdy are the exact same age, Rowdy treats Junior like a younger brother by the way he strongly protects him from danger. The relationship between Rowdy and Junior reminds me one of the summer reading book options, "The Shchwa Was Here" by Neal Shusterman. Rowdy and Juniors connection relates to Antsy Bonano and The Schwa because Antsy is there for the Schwa helping him find his way through his invisible identity, just like Rowdy helps Junior.
