Reading 32-66 #7

Question: Name/explain three issues/hurdles Junior encounters in his transition to Reardon.

Answer:

There are three main problems Junior encounters in his transition into Reardon. First, the most impactful is that he is Indian. Being Indian he is the only member of the reservation going to the school. This burden includes teasing and multiple stereotypes. For example, When Penelope asks him where he lives he tells her, "Wellpinit," I said. "Up on the rez, I mean, the reservation.""Oh," She said. "That's why you talk so funny"(Forney 61). Second, Junior does not have a lot of self confidence and is scared of his new school. He does not want to talk to his new classmates, and prevents him from becoming friends with anybody in the school. Third, Junior is small and has physical and mental disabilities which make a transition into any school difficult. Due to the fact that he is small and weak he is a key target for bullies who think that he won't fight back. His disabilities make him an unwelcome guest among his classmates. The three problems that Junior faces are his culture, his confidence, and his disabilities.
