Pages 32 to 66. "What is Mr. P’s advice to Junior? Why does he give this advice?" - Emory
In the second reading, Mr. P advises that Arnold should leave the reservation and find hope somewhere else. Mr. P tells Arnold this because he believes that Arnold is the only person on the entire reservation that has not given up on the idea of a future where life for him is better than it is now. Mr. P says to Arnold, "You threw that book in mu face because somewhere inside you refuse to give up." This is true because Arnold has had many excuses and chances to give up, such as his seizures, or giving in to alcohol and drugs like his father. But he doesn't make those excuses or take those chances, he continues to fight for hope. Arnold is also not content with current life, otherwise he would have been fine with receiving an old book. But he wasn't happy, because he wanted more. He didn't want an old book, he wanted a new book that he could call his own. Mr. P said Arnold should leave the reservation because he is the only one left with a chance, which is true.

All of these thoughts are true. I especially believe that Arnold refuses to give up because he has been fighting his entire life. He has fought against brain surgery, seizures, lisps and stutters, and experiencing the people who are drug addicts and alcoholics. "You're going to find more and more hope the farther you walk away from this sad, sad, sad reservation" (Alexie, 43). Mr. P is trying to explain to Arnold that the farther he goes away from the past, and lost opportunities, the brighter the future will end up being. Arnold believes that starting at the "Reardan" school will lead him to the most opportunities. The school has what he considers the "smartest and most athletic kids." It's really important for Arnold to make the decision as to where he wants to go to school, or more importantly where he wants to find his opportunities. "My sister is running away to get lost, but I am running away because I want to find something" (Alexie, 46). All Arnold wants is a future, and so he figures that in order to get to that point, he has to try.
