Junior accidentally hit Mr. P in the face
with a textbook, meaning to hit something inanimate. Mr. P comes up to Junior
after the incident. Mr. P’s advice was to leave the reservoir. He said that
everyone was going to kill Junior and that there was no point in fighting back.
He has fought since he was born. Mr. P said everyone has given up and that
everyone, mothers, fathers, friends, bullies, grandparents, have all been
defeated. Mr. P thinks that there is hope in Junior. Junior cant give up, when
Junior threw the book at Mr. P, he refused to lose hope. Mr. P says that
Junior should go somewhere there is hope, where others have hope.
I totally agree, but I think that there is more to it than that. In my opinion, Mr. P believes in Junior because he is the only one on the reservation who is determined, who is driven and motivated. Mr. P sees potential in him to make the change for the Indian culture that he himself regrets preventing. "You threw that book in my face because somewhere inside you refuse to give up (p. 43)." He threw the book because he cares about his education, and that is more than any indian has cared in a long time.
