WHOOPS! I just realized I did one of the guiding questions other than the blog post questions... Here's a different one. #3. -Lauren Bernier

Arnold draws to express his feelings in a way that the world will understand him. Arnold believes that words are too "unpredictable" and that words are too "limited." Arnold believes that when you draw a picture, everybody will understand it. "So I draw because I want to talk to the world. And I want the world to pay attention to me" (Alexie, 6). As a fourteen year-old, Arnold is living in a hard, unfortute situation with his family. He doesn't get any attention from his peers... It's like he's invisible and if he fell of the face of the Earth, nobody would notice. So, Arnold expresses his identity by drawing cartoons that show who he is. Arnold wishes that he could be an artist one day... Somebody important that the world will actually notice. Other than Arnold, the kid that is constantly bullied for just being different. But really, Arnold should be loved.

  1. Here, it is stated that Arnold draws because it expresses his feelings by making him feel visible and gives him room to dream. I agree with this but I also think that Arnold draws because he needs an outlet for all of the feelings that he has inside, and he can do this through drawing. And once he does this the drawing helps 'fix' his problems. Arnold faces so much stress and unfortunate poverty that drawing is really the only way to blow off some built up steam. Arnold says when he is talking about what drawing does for him, "I think the world is a series of broken dams and floods, and cartoons are tiny little lifeboats" (Alexie 6). In total, I think that Arnold draws because it helps him feel wanted and to get the bad things in his life out of Arnold's system and then continues to helps lessen the pain that he feels.

  2. Arnold also draws so he can be heard and so he knows that he has somewhere to go when he is picked on. i agree with the previous statements bot he also believes that when he draws he feels as though the world pays attention to him. That feeling is important to Arnold because he is an outcast and he feels like he needs to be heard. Arnold says that when he draws "I draw because I want to talk to the world. And I want the world to pay attention to me" (Alexie 11). Overall, Arnold deserves a break from being bullied on a day-by-day basis and I think that his only way to do that is to draw.
